Lenten Meditation Day 9 2017

Scripture

John 17:6:-19

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.[a] 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them[b] in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself,[c] that they also may be sanctified[d] in truth.

Prayer:

Jesus, your life has shown us who God is.  You have revealed His name to us.  You did this to your disciples.  They were faithful to your word and who you are.  Thank you for showing us the Father.  Thank you for giving us His name. We are yours because of His desire to have us as His people, as His sons and daughters.  Protect us from other names.  Jesus, in your name. Amen

Meditation:

I am named after my father.  He is Daniel Lee Hinkle and I am Daniel Lee Hinkle II.  That is Daniel Lee Hinkle the Second, not Jr. My dad goes by Danny and I go by Lee.  Not sure why neither of us go by Daniel?  Too lofty of a man to aspire to, maybe.  I have just always been Lee.  At one point in my life during times of imagination, I remember thinking if I ever had to change my name it would be Flint McCabe.  I think I was reading or seeing lots of Louis L’amour books around that time so it sounded like a tough name.  I have never had anyone say to me that I didn’t look like a “Lee.”  I know that happens.  “She looks more like a Mary than a Samantha.”  Our name is required on many things.  Going through the process of visa applications and moving to a new country, I have had to sign my name so many times it is exhausting. For the most part we don’t pick our names: they are thrust upon us a birth.  And if you ever feel bad about your name just be glad you are not Espn (pronounced “Espen”).

Jesus’ life manifests God’s name.  His life, they way He is the comforting confronter, the merciful judge, the faithful provider, all manifest God’s name.  Jesus is God declared.  He is the Word and the word is God’s name.  Why does the name of God need to be manifest?  So men will know it and be able to call on it.  By calling on the name we are returning to our true personhood, which is that of the created being in a loving, knowing, understanding relationship with the Creator.  Because of the fall the name got fuzzy and distorted. Jesus manifests it in order to remind our hearts of the Name. In Christ we see God.  He has given us His name.

Because I am known by “Lee” I have never really had a nickname.  It is hard to shorten “Lee”.  God has given us His name.  He has written it on our hearts.  He has revealed His name in His son.  There is no other name for us to know because in His manifest name we can be known and know all others.

Action.

Follow this link to a Navigator’s article on the Names of God.  Pray thanksgiving prayers about the names and attributes.  Meditate on how Christ manifest these names.
